This spring, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) hosted the ESPN McDonald’s All-American Jam Fest at the IIT Keating Sports Complex in Chicago. The event was powered by solar and storage, and lit by advanced, highly efficient, DC-DC LED lighting.
The June issue of the IEEE peer-reviewed journal, “Electrification Magazine”, publishes an article on this, our latest project for IIT – the Keating Sports Complex Nanogrid. This project included a roof full of solar-energy, and two storage nanogrids, then a complete lighting retrofit from 6-lamp fluorescent fixtures to advanced, DC-DC LED’s that provide more light and much better quality light with less than half the fixtures and power.
The partners on this project included the US Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, and other local organizations.
This was a really challenging and fun project. Thank you, Mohammad Shahidehpour, PhD, for your leadership and collaboration. We definitely pushed the envelope on this one!
This is an interesting read … if you’re an engineer … check it out!
